Support
During the birth you will definitely need some support. This could be from your partner, a family member or a close friend. This person is especially important during the difficult and painful stages of labour, as they can help to keep you calm and reassure you as well as keep you company during the early stages of labour, which can be really long.
Holding your hand, wiping your face and massaging your back and shoulders are all practical things your labour partner can do. They can also help you make clear to the midwife or doctor what help you need, which can make you feel much more in control. As your baby is being born they can tell you what is happening because you won't be able to see for yourself.
