The Young Parent Survival Guide from Connexions

Education

After you've had a baby, your education may well be the last thing on your mind, but being a parent doesn't mean you need to or should forget about learning. There are lots of part time and flexible courses or opportunities available at colleges or work based learning providers. (See the 'Useful Contacts' section for details). The 'Care to Learn' scheme can offer financial help with the cost of childcare and travel whilst you are in learning and doesn't affect any other benefits you receive (see www.dfes.gov.uk/caretolearn or telephone 0845 600 2809 for more information). Your Connexions Personal Adviser will be able to give you more information on local opportunities for continuing or getting back into learning.

If you are over 18, single and are claiming Job Seekers Allowance, the 'New Deal for Lone Parents' helpline will be able to give you practical help and support on what you are entitled to claim,as well as ways to help you get into work or training. See the 'Useful Contacts' section for their details.
